Born in India, lived in Kent, son of Alexander and Mary WHITWORTH (née ANDERSON ?). He married Florence May CORNWELL in Q1-1940, of 21 Newton Terrace, Newmarket, father of Phyllis who was born after his death.

In the 1939 register his wife to be, Florence CORNWELL [27-12-1913] a draper's shop assistant, was a 21 Newton Terrace, New Cheveley Road, Newmarket with her father James A CORNWELL [2-7-1888] a stableman, her mother Phyllis [16-9-1888] and Ernest FINCH [4-5-1874] a builder's labourer.


Buried 5 miles NE of Brest, Ernest seems to have become detached from his unit (known as the "Shiny 10th). This was the day that France surrendered to the Germans. The remnants of the BEF were heading for ports all along the French coast, seeking a way home



Ernest is buried in Guipavas Communal Cemetery, France Ref- plot 1. row 2. gave 28
His is the sole British war grave, just east of the entrance
